The UConn Foundation takes its responsibility to constituent transparency and privacy seriously. The following questions address many common questions about the Foundation’s use of online service vendors.

Does the UConn Foundation contract for online services?
The UConn Foundation contracts with several vendors to provide alumni and donor online services.

Why are these services important?
The UConn Foundation has found that many of its constituents prefer the ease of electronic communications, which also reduces the Foundation’s costs and allows for constituents to easily determine their own level of contact with the institution. Online giving has grown dramatically in recent years, and is a key source of fundraising support for the University of Connecticut.

Why does the Foundation need to contract for these services?
As the communication needs of the Foundation have expanded, it is more cost-effective for the Foundation to contract with outside vendors who specialize in this type of service, especially for sending e-mail communications to some of UConn’s 180,000 alumni. Sending e-mail via vendors produces a more effective delivery strategy (less e-mail is identified as spam by constituent e-mail programs when it comes from a "white-listed" vendor) and produces fewer challenge for internal mail servers. It is functionally impractical to move e-mail services of the size needed internally to the Foundation.

What steps does the Foundation take to ensure constituent privacy and security at its online vendors?
The Foundation requests the following minimum security standards from its vendors used for online services:

  • Encrypted and secure data transfer protocol
  • Administrative password encryption
  • Secure storage and off-site backup systems
  • Appropriate firewall and overall access protection
  • Regular logging of activity and penetration testing
  • PCI compliance (certificate maintained on file) to ensure that credit card transactions are encrypted and processed in accordance with industry standards.
  • Insured (certificate maintained on file)

All vendors are asked to complete a security survey to provide the Foundation with a thorough understanding of the security provided by each vendor.

Does the Foundation or its online vendors have privacy policies?
Yes. The Foundation’s is located here. One of the Foundation's main vendors for online services, Convio, Inc., has posted theirs on their Web site.
